Jersey, here we come!

In just a few minutes, we're hitting the road for a miserable 11 and a half hour drive that will end with a VACATION!!

We're going with my family to the Jersey Shore and staying at my great aunt and uncle's house. Cool thing about that? My mom used to vacation there when she was a kid.

Zac is hoping SO HARD that we run into these guys:

He's been fist pumping and the sheer amount of Jersey Shore related jokes he's been able to make is truly impressive.

I'll keep you updated on our trip while we're there... and our lovely neighbors take care of our house. Relaxing vacation, here we come!

Wedding dresses!

My mom is going to have a heart attack when she reads this - don't worry, Mom! I'm not giving anything away!

I went dress shopping three times before I found the one.  If you're interested in seeing what that was like... read along!

We first went to David's Bridal. My mom, Beth and my FMIL Lois went with me. I expected everything to be really affordable, but some of these dresses were expensive!! There are other ones I tried on, but these were the two we liked best.

I swear I didn't look like I have a huge stomach in person! I loved the lace detail on this, and the fact that it wasn't strapless.

Whoa! This one was totally crazy and totally not me, but for some reason that made it fun?

I found this one in a magazine and then looked it up online. I was totally sure that this was going to be "the one." It's beautiful in the pictures (and in this picture) but it wasn't quite as pretty in person. We left knowing we were "going to think about it."

On a whim we stopped into a new bridal store by my mom's house and I tried this bad boy on. Beautiful - but weighed about 40 pounds!

Before you think I'm a terrible bride and giving everything away - none of these are the one! I'm not going to show you that, of course!! Here's the only sneak peak I'll give:

You'll have to wait until the big day to see the rest of it - but that isn't really too far away! What do you think of all the dresses?

I am sick.

Like 102 degree fever, crazy body aches and have no voice sick.

This sucks. I like the kind of sick where you're contagious so you can't go to work but you don't really feel bad so you can work on fun projects or play around the house. Not the "I can't even get up to brush my teeth because I'm afraid I'll fall over" kind of sick.

Doctor says it's viral. Worst diagnosis ever. Love paying money for someone to say, "Yeah, it's viral so I can't give you anything to help you feel better and I have no idea how long it will last. Sorry!"  Did have a mono test - and just so you know, if it comes back positive I am not going to be a happy camper with a vacation quickly approaching!

Hopefully I'll be back to my normal, non-sick and grouchy self tomorrow!

Things I Want to Make

I haven't shown you some of the things I've recently added to my "Things to Make" list. Here's some eye-candy and inspiration for you:

This tool storage solution from Pregnant with Power Tools is so cool! And it would work in our creepy, low-ceiling, dirty basement.

Is this wreath not the cutest thing ever? We don't have anything hanging on our front door and we totally should.

I don't think my sewing skills are up to par (ha!) for this golf club cover from Positively Splendid, but maybe it will be a birthday present for my dad. And then I'll buy him one when this doesn't turn out.

I want to make this t-shirt hat from At Second Street so badly. I attempted, but one of my old t-shirts wasn't big enough to cut out the circle head piece. And I throw away all of Zac's old t-shirts because I'm organized like that. Hmm... on the look-out for large t-shirts I'll never wear!

We love this desk from West Elm, but since we can't afford to pay hundreds for it, we're going to build the Knock-Off Wood version for our living room. As soon as we find the time!

That's some of the stuff I've been wanting to tackle - what's on your "to-make," "to-redecorate," "to-build" or "to-do" list?

Introducing... our flower girl!

Belle is the daughter of one of our family friends, and she is a total ham. The more people around, the cuter she gets. Which, of course, is perfect flower girl material! She'll be 4 1/2 at our wedding.

Is she not adorable??

I think our wedding just got a whole lot cuter...

Tutorial: Appliquéd Tote Bag

If you're not sure how to appliqué, it's really easy! I made this tonight in less than 30 minutes:

And you can make it too! My grandmother taught me how to appliqué, and the steps are really simple once you know how.

Start with a blank tote bag. I got this one from CSN.

Print out the letter you want in the size you want. You can use any font and any size. Here's the rub - make sure you mirror the image! You either need to flip it before you print it, or trace it through the backside of the paper. This is the most important thing to remember!

You'll trace the letter (backwards!) onto Heat'n Bond Lite Iron-on Adhesive. I always get this at Joann's when I have a 40% off coupon. One roll will last you a very long time.

Lay the traced image onto the wrong side of your fabric. This is the second most important thing to remember!

Sorry the picture is blurry - can't figure out why!

Use your iron according to the settings on the Heat'n Bond to attach the paper to the fabric. Cut around your letter.

This is when you'll want to cut out as closely to the shape as possible. When you're working with shapes, you don't have to be totally perfect - just make it as perfect as you feel like you need to.

Peel off the backing from the letter and position it onto your tote bag.

You can move it around until you're happy with it; it won't stick until you iron it.

Iron the shape onto your tote bag, again using the settings recommended by the Heat'n Bond directions.  The letter/shape will be STUCK - there's no going back at this point!

Now is when you start to sew. A few things to remember:
  1. Thread: You can use any color thread you want. If you use one that coordinates with the fabric, it will be less noticeable. Black will make the appliqué really stand out.
  2. You want to use a blanket stitch. This is the stitch on your machine that takes two stitches forward and then one to the side.
Put your fabric into your machine, and position the needle anywhere on the shape - just not on a corner or curve. I usually roll the needle down by hand to make sure I'm happy with the alignment.

You'll want the stitches coming forward to fall just in line with the edge of the shape. Your "sideways" stitches will help secure the shape. It isn't really going anywhere because of the Heat'n Bond, but this way none of your edges will come loose.

Blanket stitch until you come to a corner. These may seem complicated, but they're super simple. You can go as slow as you want to (the slower you go, the nicer your stitches will look).  When you come to a corner, hand roll the needed until it is positioned needle down at the very corner. Lift up the foot and turn your fabric. Reset the blanket stitch so it begins from the "two stitches forward" spot again, giving you maximum control over your stitches. Continue until you reach the next corner.

Curves are the same way - just keep the needle down and lift the foot up to position your fabric to where you need it to be.

When you're finished. you'll end at the same place you began. When you pull your fabric off the machine, the back will look like this:

You will also have two strings hanging similarly on the front. Using a pin or your finger nail, lightly tug the thread until the threads from the front pull through to the back. When you find the right spot, they'll come through easily. Split them two and two (doesn't matter which ones) and tie them together to secure the stitches. Note: If you accidentally sew over your threads or can only get one through from front to back, it won't really matter. Just tie what you can.

And voila! A beautiful appliquéd shape to brighten up an otherwise plain tote bag!

As a side note, the uses for appliqué are truly endless. You can appliqué onto dish towels (a great first project), t-shirts, quilt squares - you name it! This is my favorite appliqué project I've done so far:

All of the animals are appliquéd - and while it was time consuming, it wasn't difficult! You just end up appliquéing each shape in layers until the entire shape is finished.

Good luck - happy sewing!

I'm linking up to all of my favorite link parties this week (see sidebar) and also submitting this to the CSI "Fabric & Sewing" Challenge!

Oh hey there, August.

I've been reading all these blog posts today that say things like "Where did August come from? It's too soon!"

I say, "Oh hey there, August. What took you so long??"

Maybe it's because we're going on vacation this month, or maybe it's because July was the craziest month ever, or maybe it's because in our non-air conditioned house we are one month closer to fall, but I am SO ready for August to be here.

July was busy! A month ago I was still up to my eyeballs in Summer Camp. I wasn't engaged. I didn't have a wedding date, venue, photographer or dress (AHH! I got a dress! Details coming soon!). July was a long, crazy month. And I'm glad it's over.

Hopefully August will bring me a little bit more free time to make some projects. My things-to-make-someday list is out of control. And Christmas is in less than 5 months. And Emily's birthday is in less than 5 days. Those of us who like to hand make presents don't love deadlines. Hurts the creative process.

Oh - and at some point I'd like to finish moving into this house. We went to the coolest cocktail party last weekend (thanks, Megan and Drew!). They moved in around the same time we did but their house is finished. As in, perfect. Things on the wall - no boxes in sight - looks like we've lived here forever - everything is painted - perfect.  That's what we're missing in this house... the feeling of finished. Realizing that I'm not sure your house is ever really complete, we could kick it up a notch and get some of the rooms painted, make the pillows I've been dreaming about and hang some pictures.

And school starts the 3rd week in August. For me. Classes two nights a week plus an online component (yes, online class for graduate school. Yes, it's ridiculous. Yes, it leaves me with one more free evening so I'm not going to fight it). I'm apparently just a glutton for punishment!

What has your life been like lately?

Hanging with Jack

On Friday, this little guy came to our house so his Mommy and Daddy could enjoy a night out on the town.

Jack and Zac

I LOVE to babysit. I'm the kind of babysitter who doesn't let kids watch a movie because we can play pretend games instead and build our imaginations. Yeah - I'm pretty much the best babysitter in the world.

BUT... our house doesn't have very main toys. So when a kid comes to your house and you don't have a lot of toys, you let him play with whatever he is least likely to kill himself with - case and point, the broom. We don't always make children earn their keep at 18 months...

Later that night, sweet victory is ours. To maintain my reputation as the world's best babysitter, I won't tell you how long it took to get to this point.

Perfect Friday night to remind us how not ready we are to do this.

6:00 PM:
Tara: We could totally do this. He's so cute and it's fun to have him running around.
10:00 PM:
Tara: I'm exhausted. We are so not ready for this.

Bakin' with Bacon

I made these bad boys the other night - Zac's allergies have been making him super cranky and whiney bothering him and so when I found this recipe online, I thought I'd surprise him into feeling better.

They are bacon chocolate chip cookies. And they are disgusting.  Well - to be fair, Zac really liked them. But I thought they were disgusting. Our neighbors tried them, and Bob agreed with me while Suzanne agreed with Zac.  The cookies themselves are good, I just thought it was strange to be enjoying a chocolate chip cookie and then taste a piece of bacon in your mouth.

So... don't worry about me bringing them to your next part, but it's always fun to be a little adventurous in the kitchen, right?
